The people behind the foundation

Our foundation’s work is driven by people who act out of deep conviction and invest their knowledge and time to sustainably improve medical care for children and adults with a rare disease. The committees of the Eva Luise and Horst Köhler Foundation work on a purely voluntary basis.

Management Board

Prof. Dr. med. Annette Grüters-Kieslich

Prof. Dr. med. Annette Grüters-Kieslich, a research-oriented pediatrician and adolescent physician, has been committed to improving medical care for patients with rare diseases since her student days – whether bedside, in the laboratory, lecture hall, university administration or in one of her many honorary posts.

After heading various medical institutions and departments as Dean of University Medicine Berlin and as Medical Director of Heidelberg University Hospital, Annette Grüters-Kieslich, now retired, is once again conducting research as a visiting scientist at Charité Berlin. Her research focuses on rare congenital developmental disorders, the pathophysiology and treatment of rare forms of childhood obesity and the epigenetic regulation of developmentally important genes.

As Chairwoman of the Board of our foundation, she has been the strategic head of diverse initiatives since 2013. She is also an honorary member of the DFG Senate Commission for Clinical Research, Vice President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), member of the Medical Sciences Committee of Science Europe and Vice President of the All European Academies (ALLEA).

Achim Schroeter

Like the founding family, Achim Schroeter has personal connections to the topic and, as the former head of administration of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association, was one of the founding fathers of the foundation in 2006. Since then, he has been a prudent member of its Board of Directors. In particular, he is responsible for legal and administrative issues and the management of the foundation’s assets as well as donations and funding.
